"Feedback Is Payback" (Epitaph)
When I first heard about this band I
was really excited. "New melodic punk band from Hermosa Beach, they're as good
as Pennywise" someone said, and I was anxious to hear it. But when I actually
heard it, oh my god what a dissapointment that was. They're not Pennywise, no
they're far from it. Yet they don't have a touch of originality in their music.
It is just flavourless, and lyrics aren't very deep minded. Their songs are
boring, difficult to listen and impossible to remember. I can only hope this
band gets better with time...Pavle
THE APERS
"The Buzz Electric" CD (Stardumb)
These guys are touring over America as
we speak, so you might want to check this out! The Apers are the heart of
Stardumb Records label and their brand of Queers/Weasel pop-punk (Is "buzz-pop"
the correct term?) quickly made them pretty big in Europe. The guitar player,
Jerry Hormone, even gets some pretty hot chicks on tour -- is it the prize for
being an obedient Stardumb robot that he is, or is it his boyish good looks, I
will be able to tell once they arrive for the show I booked them in Yugoslavia!
This is their 2nd full-length, and the sound is pretty much the same as their
debut LP. The ancient wise formula of sticking to what you do best worked here
as well, so if you like pop-punk, this is a great record for ya. If it makes any
difference to anyone (I know it does to me!), the cover features one cute ass
and two long legs (in stockings, yay) of a Ms. Ann Artistic. I appreciate her
panties are not thongs cuz I hate that shit. Buy this thing so Jerry can buy
condoms. You can jerk off to it or listen to 12 fine songs....Nikola 'Ketchup'

ARGIES "Great
Combat performances" CD (Mad Butcher/Combative)
They will be glad to know that I call them Argentinean Clash. I don't have a lot of chance to actually meet some of the folks whose records I review. But this time I met the guys from this great band and I got to share the stage with them. It was one of my favorite gigs that I did with my band. Argies are a great band with a lot of playing skills and song making craftsmanship. This is a collection of the stuff from their last ten yrs. of existence. It's in Spanish and this is one of the few times that I didn't mind the language barrier. It simply fills your heart with a rebel pride. Especially when you hear Banda Bassotti cover "Luna Rossa". Best release of Mad Butcher records ever!!!

THE BACKWOOD CREATURES
"Living Legends" CD (Stardumb, 2003)
I still owe a beer to the Backwoods' guitarist, Nilz Nonchalant. He might take
this positive review instead, for we're not likely to meet in some time. The
second longplayer from Germany's Backwood Creatures is what noone can call a
regular Chuck-wearing, Ramones-worshiping Weasel-core band. This features a very
mature sound, a Chuck-wearing band combining some mighty riffs and some rocking
solos with genial pop songwriting. A hell lot of rock'n'roll fun (and jumping
and dancing too) packed in a very 50's cover! Even includes a song about
Cologne's premium garage rock bar, the Sonic Ballroom (been there, done that!).
Fans of the Real Kids, Heartbreakers and the likes, buy this right away! Others
-- buy it too, you won't be disappointed. This is probably the best rocking
album I heard this year, but I'm under impression the title will stick for a
long time. 12 pieces of pure gold! (NK)
BELVEDERE "It was hell said the former kid" CD (House Hold name)
Pretty nice to see a band you've discovered in some strange ways some years ago growing and developing. Vlada dug up these guys somewhere and we reviewed their first CD. Now, I got this new stuff from a relatively established and known label. During the time they were out of our sight, they've been hitting the road on several occasions, sometimes with the hip faces like Bad Religion. Anyway, new album is really nothing special. What's really annoying is those trendy miles long song titles ( all those "Will you be so kind to still be my girlfriend even though I was with your best friend while you were in hospital in mortal danger after being hit by a pick-up truck that your brother in law was driving in intoxicated condition") and 1-2-3 slam/kick music. Once again, I don't see a point in blindly repeating someone else's (bad) punkrock. It's semi-melodic, how's that...

BOMBSHELL ROCKS "From Here And On" CD (Burning Heart
Records)
Watchout girls and boys, cause here comes the new bombshell rocks album! On
epitaph. com they say this album is rooted in the Oi! tradition.Well, for me
there ain't much Oi! on this one, nevertheless it is a fantastic CD, maybe the
best Burning Heart release for 2003. Form Here And On contains a large variety
of fresh, different melodies, strong, mostly personal lyrics as well as some
other small things that made this album more than just an ordinary punk album. I
like this one better than Cityrats And Alleycats, cause for me it has more
importance, tunes that can stay in your head for days, and lyrics almost
everyone can identify with...Pavle

CAPTAIN
EVERYTHING "Learn to play with..." CD (House Hold Name)
Huh, I hate when I have to pull out a couple of wise words to describe objectively something that I really can't listen to very much. It's fair to say it's a melodic punk rock with simple 1-2-3-4 fast songs. Something like early Fatwreck releases in mid 90's. I'm really fed up with this kind of bands and records. As my good friend says: If a band is nobody's favorite band, why the hell do they play? When I get my hands on CDs like this one, one question always pops up in my head: Why do these western people take their hi-standard for granted, when I just think about all those cool bands in damp basements around me making 3000 times better stuff but without any future release or tour. C'mon guys, listen to some music before you make some. There are other bands besides Strung Out and MxPx. Try some of your fellow Brits...
DAYCARE
SWINDLERS “Heathen Radio” CD (Go-Kart Records)
Daycare Swindlers are playing good, fast DC hardcore punk I’m
sure everyone of you who are into old-school hard-core will surely dig. Daycare
Swindlers like to put some ska sections in songs, but you won’t find any ska
sounds on this album. 12 songs in just 19 minutes are the best proof that this
album won’t bore you. If we were grading the albums we review here, this one
would get (1-5) 4-! And yeah, there is also one cover of Youth Brigade....Vlada
DROPKICK MURPHYS "Live in Boston" CD (Hellcat)
I think this is the second time that Hellcat didn't mind its tradition of doing only digipak CDs! It's mid-priced CD packed with great songs of DKM (plus some covers) recorded live in their hometown at a St. Paddy's day gig. It's a perfect vivid presentation of a gig to someone who didn't have a chance to be there. Great sound quality, good choice of songs and a marriage proposal in the middle of the set (she said yes!). All in all, enough to keep me happy while waiting for the next studio work.

FABULOUS DISASTER "Panty raid" CD (Pink&Black)
One of the greatest porn swindles of all times is the fact that they push us to believe that lesbians are hottest of all chicks. This is a 3/4 lesbian band and none of the band members would pass an audition for Jenna Jameson's sidekick in lesbo scene. But all stupid sexist remarks aside, they really kick some serious ass with guitars and drums. They maybe wild, loud dykes but it's still hot-blooded punkrock that makes you wanna scream and shout (but still in tune), unlike those all-women bands on Kill Rock Stars label who sound like a group of schizophrenics in period pains. So, women power + punkrock = an obligation to track 'em at a gig in a town near yours.

FARSE “Boxing Clever” CD (Moon Ska Europe)
First of all read the first few sentences I wrote in Mixtwitch
review. And this is ska punk? Come on. This commercial mtv wanna-be sound sucks
so much that it hurts! Farse tried to put together all those bands you see on
MTV in one, so you’ll hear everything on this album from those ‘alternative’
metal bands to those B92 student wanker bands and with touch of ska in every
third song. Farce!....Vlada
THE FAVORATS "Outta space" 7" (Stardumb)
The Queers stood in an orderly queue in front of the German embassy in New Hampshire and got themselves a German citizenship. Then they added an extra female band member and finally changed their name in Favorats. That's the false story...All these Queers comparisons are here to underline not just a 93% matching but also a pretty hi-quality. After all: if you steal from the best and you do it properly - it can't be bad! Still there's a lot to catch up in the lyrics department if they wanna be the Queers. All these childish sex-crazed lyrics are getting boring... What the fuck?! All of my Stardumb vinyl singles are skipping...

THE
HYMANS “Erare Hymanum Est” CD (Wynona)
OK, I’m pretty familiar with Hymans music, and you can read reviews
of their AMP Records releases in older issues of S.C.A.B.; so I must say I was
very glad to get this CD. In case you don’t know, Hymans are the band that sound
like the Ramones as much as you can without being the Ramones (ok, you could’ve
guessed it just from the bands name!), and of course that’s a great thing. Since
I received this CD for a review one month before it’s release, I don’t have
a booklet or any info about it, so you’ll have to rely on my punk knowledge!
7 songs from this CD are from Hymans album “Hymiliation”, 3 of them are from
“Hyman Rights”, 2 from “The Chairman Of The Bored” and I don’t know about the
two songs left, and I supposed those are exclusives for this release. As you
can see there are 14 songs here and that’s not much keeping in mind that this
is the best-of release. Anyway, Hymans are great band, and if you like the Ramones,
I’m sure you’ll like this on the first listen. Selection of songs on this release
is pretty good since they left out some of The Hymans pretty shitty ones (but
missed some of the songs I like also). btw. One Hyman left the band, so they
are a trio now. Get this and I can guarantee you that you’ll like it......Vlada

IKARA COLT "Chat and business" CD+1 (Epitaph EU)
I really tried to find somebody to write this one, but all the early Sonic Youth fans emigrated from Serbia in early 90's. So I was left alone to tell you how it is. Actually, It's safe to say these folks have a really nice future on late night MTV2 and steady student following throughout many a British medium sized venues . As I said earlier, it reminds me of Sonic Youth. Comes in awesome double digipak and runs for the "look of the year in the field of indie music" award. And you get a bonus CD with few more songs...

LAG WAGON "Blaze" CD (Fatwreck)
"May 16th" was the only song I ever liked from this band. Aside from bearing the second most annoying band name on Fatwreck (Swingin' Utters win in this category, but they can get away with murder if you ask me) they are also the second worst band on the label to me (unbeatably shitty Strung Out are all time overrated Fatwreck band). I know that for some reason people worldwide really like them, but complicated arrangements, too long songs, constantly the same drumming and over-whiny vocals are not my thing. Since the singer formed his other band (Bad Astronaut), he's also making his primary band to sound like B.A. Astronauts are really way better, but to tell the whole truth I was never listening to Wagon's previous records too carefully, so I guess it's better to take it from someone else for a real in-depth analysis...
MAD CADDIES "One more" CD (Fatwreck)
For years and years now I've been arguing with my friends who all claimed how great this band is. And I was just near of winning the argument with my attitude that they're nothing special and how their silly punk with horn(y) section is pretty dum. Then they put this one out and cut me out of any further discussion. This is really a great record. Maybe because it's really far from their previous stuff. Now they slow it down wisely, add a nice pop production of the 80's, go above 1-2-3-4 punk level in song arrangements and the vocals are more melodic than ever before. If there's a justice, they'll hit it really big with this one and knock down the likes of Less Than Jake.
MANDA
AND THE MARBLES “More Seduction” CD (Go-Kart)
I heard a lot of great things about this album before I got it.
So I was really looking forward for it, and as I expected it didn’t disappoint
me at all. Very nice pop-punk melodies, great vocals from beautiful Manda (although
not as good looking as Barbara Ann, but still...) will make you sing their songs
all day long. There are very few punk-rock bands with female vocals I heard
lately that I liked...actually besides this one there are only the Kingpins!
I’m sure after this album Manda & The Marbles will grow big (they already
even opened for the Elvis Costello!), and you try to remember where did you
read first about them.....Vlada

THE METHADONES "Career
Objective" CD (Stardumb, 2003)
Oh well. We all know how many bands emerged from the decomposing corpse of
Screeching Weasel. As for Dan Schafer a.k.a. Vapid, he's done the stinkiest
things with Sludgeworth, some predictable (but still nice) Ramonesy stuff with
the Riverdales (yup, y'all heard they reformed by know), and nice pop-punk and
frat-rock tunes with the Mopes. Now, from a Vapid-fronted band that the
Methadones are, this is quite unexpected! I love to hear Danny's vocals, but
it's the mighty riffs and guitar solos that knocked me out at the first
listening. THIS IS NOT POP-PUNK!!! Sure, it's pop-punk at some points, but it's
also '77-style brit-punk, it's grease-rock, it's one helluva mix -- 11 songs and
most of them pure hits! This is all killer, no filler, aggressive but catchy
punk rock that beats the Methadones debut album 10 to 1 (songwise), this "TV
World" song just plain kicks asses in the style of old, great bands... This
title is filed under "Surprise of the Year" and wears a "Highest Recommendation"
tag; and, kiddo, if you thought Ben Weasel's solo record was cool, you need this
Methadone therapy right away....Nikola Ketchup
NO COMPLY "Some better days" CD/EP (melody makers)
Finally, some healthy striving for more on Serbian HC/punk scene. What brings most of the hope is the fact that the kids who pulled this out are really young and with rare healthy ambitions and ideas. These guys are not re-inventing the wheel with the music they play (pseudo-authenticity is a sad and tragic common tendency among Serbian bands. Too much "avant-garde" and no talent and effort at all) it's been all heard before (well not exactly), but it's done in proper manner and quality is obvious. I guess they took their directions mostly from Bad Religion's albums ("Suffer" era). I'm sure there is a sack full of bad mouthing and backstabbing in front of these youngsters by those who just do nothing. But, if they stick to their guns some big achievements are inevitable. A clear sign to all the other kids who want to create some "scene" that it's not impossible at all.

ONE STEP SHIFT "Chemical Burn" 7" (LoderBrock)
You can buy my vote very easily by sending us stuff on nice looking limited edition vinyl. This is the first piece put out by new label LoderBrock who chose to give a chance to this Oakland band. All this is totally unknown to me and all that I could find familiar is the cover illustration by Derk Hess who is a master in his field. Music-wise this is pretty interesting combination of really diverse stuff. There's a touch of Nomeansno (especially in the first song) and some relaxing alternative rock melodies on the flipside.

PETER AND THE TEST TUBE BABIES "Alien Pubduction" CD (Captain Oi!)
Re-issue of their worst album (1997). This is where they finally lost it and became pretty blown-out and boring. Maybe it was the change of classic line-up or they were just not fresh any more, but it resulted in this boring album with a really nice cover design (their best ever!) and with only one good song ("1471"). This is where I lost all interest in them. Since then they are on a constant downway but still kicking ass live as they ever did! Old records remain one of the best cuts of punk for all times!
CAPTAIN Oi!, P.O. Box 501, High Wycombe, Bucks HP10 8QA, England
REVILLOS "Attack" CD (Captain Oi!)
This one was delaying and delaying...and now finally is out. I am a fool for this kind of campy-trashy pop and punk. This is a kind of a collection of the stuff they recorded while on EMI but they weren't satisfied with the production and quality and never wanted to go public with it. Now they re-did it and you get a really cool album of their weird stuff and a bunch of covers ("Tell him", "Manhunt", "Santa Claus..."). A pearl in the thrash-pop genre. I'd love to see them on stage. That must be really something!
RISE AGAINST "Revolutions per minute" CD (Fatwreck)
One good song out of 14, nice covers design and a great book recommendations list in the booklet are the only few good things about this record. The rest is a weekend revolutionary kids with expensive shoes and sponsored clothing preaching to the converted backed up with some really boring hardcore-rock music. Having Anti-Flag and Propagandhi on the roster should be quite enough for Fat's "revolution" department. These guys still have plenty of time to spend in the practice room. I'll never figure out how such an (under)average band gets signed to a hip label and gets all the good stuff...
SONIC
DOLLS “Riot At Sheep Dog Trials” CD (Stardumb)
Fourth full-length from this 10 year old German band that’s been
compared with Screeching Weasel and Queers (and I couldn’t disagree more!).
I really dig this punk-r’n’r sound (not poppunk you may heard!) but the only
thing that really goes on my nerves is the voice of the singer Elvis J. President
(ne, nije Elvis J. Kurtovich!). Luckily, drummer ToMo_01 is singing some
songs
and those songs sound much better. Two songs I liked best are “Angry Dolls”
and “My Little Star”….Vlada
SWINGIN' UTTERS "Dead flowers, bottles..." CD (Fat Wreck)
Heart-moving! One of those records that make you feel bass with guts and guitars with heart while drums and vocals hit you in the head directly! This is a "London Calling" of their career! 17 songs in some 37 minutes, a layer of raw streetpunk followed by a layer of accordions and mandolins and lyrics that come from unpublished works of Jack Kerouac and Shane McGowan. You go thru seven different moods while listening to this record and what remains after it's finished is that unique atmosphere of feeling good about yourself in a very strange miserable way. Just check out blasts like "Glad" or "Hopeless wows" (also on the acoustic repertoire of Filthy Thieving Bastards) but also classics-to-be like title number, "Lampshade" or "All that I can Give". AWESOME RECORD!!!
TEA BREAK "It's not so far" CDEP (melody makers)
It's been a while since I got a chance to hear something of such hi-quality level coming out of "domestic" production. Belgrade four piece outfit playing its stuff in the vein of typical Fatwreck bands with a lot of influences from the likes of Lifetime. Only 6 songs so far, but it's enough to give a clear signal on what the future full-length will be like. It's clear to see these guys really put a thought in what they're doing and they've carefully listened to some of the bands they try to reach. A kick in the head for all the Six Packs, Lude Krawe and all the other cliché bands from all of the ex-ex-Yugoslavia territories. It's nothing groundbreaking but these guys do it with style!

THINK TANK "Here's the moment" CD (House Hold Name)
My not yet scientifically proven theory about how ozone layer hole above Australia resulted into a nation full of highly creative and skillful musicians (Living End, H-Block 101, Midnight Oil, Radio Birdman...) is on again!
In the age of various Rival Schools, Saves the Days or Hot Water Musics, these kangaroos will definitely find their piece of sweet pie. So, you get the picture, teenage emo indie rock in the vein of the aforementioned...Well produced and with potential to satisfy any modern emo kid. I can take it in small doses...

TOYS THAT KILL/RAGING HORMONES split 7" (Stardumb)
Second installment in "Terrific team-ups" series. This really kicks ass.
TTK are superior descendent of semi-legendary FYP from California. While I was never fond of FYP, these guys got me by the balls (Ooooh, it feels gooood!). Definite pop-punk sound, more punk than pop. Must have!
On the other side we have The Raging Hormones who are not as good but they also deliver some pogoing material and song titles such as: "My girl swallows" can't go unnoticed. I never really liked Stardumb's full lengths (with some honorable exceptions) and maybe that's because this is best taken in small but effective doses. Real pop punk lives on small die-hard labels like this one!
THE TRANSPLANTS "S/t" CD (Hellcat)
I guess this is kinda old, but all of this time it managed to skip my writing. Not that I was avoiding it, on the contrary! It is a very nice record. I don't know if it is some kind of trend among Rancid members where they must prove how many diverse styles they're into and how many of styles they can play successfully. What we get is an album of electro-punk, if there is such thing (now there is). Imagine plain punkrock crossed with later Clash, later Blitz (Nidge Miller's solo works) and even some of the funk-hip hop. Or maybe King Django going more punk. Anyway, a nice effort with only a minor glitch in being too long. You're humming along "Diamonds and Guns" these days anyway...
USELESS I.D. "No vacation from the world" CD (Kung-Fu)
What can I say...This kind of band always leaves me indifferent and generally with nothing much to say. This is (I think) their third album, and from what I know, it is the best so far. They slowed down a bit, songs are better shaped and the sound level is excellent. But, as I said it's just another one of those bands from the pattern (although it's fair to say they're really trying to break out and do something more of their own). But If you compare two more or less underdeveloped scenes like Israeli and Serbian (both countries constantly knee-deep in shit), you'll see that they're still way ahead...

VARIOUS ARTISTS "European Pop-Punk Virus #2" CD (Stardumb)
Vol. 1 of "Virus" was a kicker -- for me it stood for all the good stuff on
European scene; it really got me into Europe! Now on Vol. 2, even Yugoslavia has
a representative, my fair neighbors, The Shoplifters! Proud we stand at this
moment of glory! No kidding, this still has all the greats amongst some fresh
blood. The Apers, The Manges, Backwood Creatures, Sonic Dolls and Dirtshakes (my
all-time favorites!). 28 tracks at all, all previously unreleased, by 28 bands
from every corner of the Old Continent. Don't think of this as a low-budget
Stardumb sampler, for that it ain't -- this is a full-priced CD with many non-Stardumb
bands (including the big-league stars, the Travoltas) with a huge booklet with
lyrics and photos. For every lover of the genre, or anyone getting a first taste
of European youngbloods -- GO!!!...Nikola 'Ketchup'
V/A "Skannibal 2" CD (Mad Butcher)
How good was "Dirty Dozen 2" compared to "Dirty Dozen"? I think I could find 1 to 3 people to say that it was better. Same thing here. 2 out of 100 people will find this better. Bad sequel of a really decent first part. While vol. 1 was a fine example of international independent ska scene this one is a compilation of average and under average bands who (with some exceptions) all play with a same pattern. It's so predictable and constantly same that you just have to push 'stop' followed by 'eject' button. So, once again I can just warmly recommend you part one and advise you to avoid this one. 21 bands/songs. Nice cover illustrations though...

THE
VINDICTIVES “Nuttin’ For Christmas / Jingle Bells” 7” (Stardumb)
Probably most of you know Vindictives from some releases on Lookout
records. They haven’t been playing for a while, but now they’re back on our favorite EU pop-punk label – Stardumb. Both songs are very good, familiar pop-punk with
vocals that remind me of Toy Dolls and Olga a lot. Great cover design we that
we're
used to with Stardumb, beautiful vinyl that’s available in three colors: red,
green and transparent; and with every 7” comes a Vindictives Christmas postcard.....Vlada
WIFEBEATERS "Child Mulletstaion" 7" (Wifebeaters)
Whooa! Blood red vinyl carrying an illegal and immoral stuff...The plastic disc inside the covers is totally excessive, covers are real fun! As the band name suggests, it's all about being a scum in general. I haven't had so much healthy (?!) laughs since god knows when. Covers shoving Ike delivering a "good old" smack in the teeth to Tina and hilarious lyrics crossed with more ultra funny details. The music aspect: A guy holding a handy cassette recorder next to a bunch of frying dishes falling down a long staircase. These guys found each other in prison (I guess)...Highly recommendable!!!
Oh, the record also comes on a limited black n' blue vinyl. Is there anything more suitable in this world?

WISEGUY
"Burning The Tracks" CD (Stardumb)
Let it be known that Wiseguy rocks.
Rocks! There's a number of things about this band that I dislike -- mainly it's
the "high art" profile that they kept on this release's cover too (and, c'mon,
admit it, something about their looks is curious). But, homeboy, this debut
album rocks much harder than their previous Stardumb 7". It's advertised as
AC/DC and Hellacopters meet Turbonegro, and they got it right! This is surely
riding the Hard Rock RevivalTM wave, it's sleazy, roaring and huge, it's
Electric Frankenstein at its best points, but it doesn't suck (as much) as some
of these hardrockers can. Eleven tracks, a few of which are truly great. My
recommendations, at least for people who have the stomach for a Dutch band
sounding Scandinavian. Yo, fire it up, daddy-o!....Nikola 'Ketchup'
WISEGUY "Pull
the cup" 7" (Stardumb)
The most straightforward kick in the teeth band on this highly respectable teeny label. This is Holland's answer to Swedish rock mania. Yes, it's safe to notice these guys take it from Hellacopters and Backyards, then throw in some Wildhearts charm and the final product is one of the best (if not the best) Stardumb releases. Too bad I got a pretty wrecked vinyl that's skipping now and than (more now). The guys put out a full length just recently so I can warmly recommend you that one as well. Rockers into orbit...
